Did You Know – About Marlton NJ?
Ok, besides high taxes and traffic jams, hey Marlton NJ isn't such a bad place. For that matter it's has some pretty cool history behind it. Like this other name…Evesham Township.
So, let's test you knowledge about Marlton (AKA Evesham Township) and see if you knew:
- Marlton was founded by Welsh and English farmers beginning in 1676
- that Evesham N.J.was officially established in 1688 and was incorporated as one of the original 13 townships in Burlington County
- the first settlement in Evesham was made by William and Elizabeth Evans between 1680 and 1690 (it was so long ago, their neighbors were Indians!).
- that Evesham, New Jersey was named for Evesham, England, a Borough in England, near Stratford on River Avon
- the Township was originally larger than it is today, and had included what today are Mount Laurel, Medford, Lumberton, Hainesport, Shamong, and Washington Townships (WOW! imagine how much more our taxes could be).
- the name Marlton came about in the early 19th century. Marlton stems from the name "Marl" which is a fertlalizer, that is a natural mix of green clay and shell which became popular for use as a fertilizer and was used into the mid-twentieth century.
- the first "Modern" development in Marlton, called Marlton Hills was built in 1954 and 1955. See pictures of Marlton Hills original brochure and other housing developments. Can you believe housees were priced at $10,200!!
- the Village of Marlton was established in 1758.
- while the names Evesham and Marlton are usually interchanged, Marlton is actually several blocks in the area of Main Street and Maple Avenue, the area surrounding this is Evesham.
- Evesham was founded in 1676 by a man named Thomas Eves
- in 1955 PH-32, a Project Nike missile base from the Cold War, was located near Cherokee High School. When first opened, the base was part of a ring of 12 Nike sites intended to protect the population and military installations of the Philadelphia area during the Cold War.
- Savage Fields is an old Indian burial ground
- as of 2000 US Census Bureau, the total population was 40,194
Don't stop there. Check out Marlton NJ history and awesome photos dating back to 1950. Enjoy!
